For an institution as large, complex, and respected as the MGH, the
administrative framework running throughout the research endeavors is relatively
unencumbering to the researcher. The administration is not a typical rigid
pyramidal structure. It is perhaps this less than rigid structure that has
allowed the MGH and its researchers the opportunity and flexibility to assume
the leadership position they enjoy today.
The responsibility for the specific research programs and their direction lies
with the Chiefs of Services/Departments. They and their colleagues constitute
the scientific backbone of the MGH research. The research reputation of the
Institution is the result of these professionals and their predecessors.
