Preface
For almost two
centuries, the institutions that make up Partners HealthCare System,
Inc. have enjoyed the respect of the communities they serve through
their charitable work in health care, teaching and research. In
addition, each has achieved a reputation as an institution of the
highest integrity. These reputations are priceless assets that must
be maintained.
This Code of
Conduct sets forth principles of conduct intended to govern the
actions of individuals employed by or associated with Partners and
its affiliates. 1 In adopting this Code, the Trustees
of Partners expect to ensure the continued loyalty and integrity
of all those associated with Partners, while recognizing and encouraging
those outside interests that may benefit the Individual and the
institution. Adherence to this Code is one of the conditions of
an Individual's employment, appointment or service to Partners.
Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action including termination
of an Individual’s association with Partners.
The Code has
two Parts. The first, called General Principles of Conduct, articulates
ethical standards to guide corporate and individual behavior in
carrying out Partners’ responsibilities. The second Part, which
is called the Conflicts of Interest Policy, identifies relationships
and conduct that create either conflicts of interest or conflicts
of commitment; prohibits or restricts some; and establishes a system
for disclosing and resolving all potential conflicts. The Conflicts
Policy has some special provisions that apply only to those Individuals
engaged in biomedical or other academic research.
